Literature in the AI Era: Who Writes the Book, and What Is Creativity Worth?

Artificial intelligence is transforming not just the world of literature, but the entire economic model of creativity. South African author Coral Hart published 371 books in just 20 months using AI tools — writing primarily in the romance genre using multiple AI systems since February 2025. The story sparked fierce debate: Hart received death threats and hate messages, yet stood firm in her approach.
Hart herself says: “AI is just a tool. The ideas, the editing, the storylines — they all come from me.” She claims to have sold over one million books and earned more than $1 million in 2026 alone. She is also developing an AI-powered book-writing platform called Authorythm.
Publishing 371 books in 20 months is a vivid illustration of how the authorship model is shifting. Managing an entire book production pipeline — not just writing — may become a new form of authorship. But no matter how far technology advances, one essential question remains: Is creativity simply the assembly of text, or is it the expression of lived human experience, emotion, and worldview? In an age of proliferating content, does the value of genuine thought, deep meaning, and reader trust only grow?
Researchers warn that near-zero-cost AI-generated books risk saturating the market and diluting attention for other authors. Yet experts also acknowledge that readers continue to seek and reward quality content.
