Read and translate the text.

Our Family
We are a large and friendly family. There are six of us: grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, my younger sister and I. I have an elder sister, too, she is 22 years old, but she does not live with our family. She has a little family of her own: a husband and a child – a two-year old boy.
Our grandfather is a scientist. He is on the wrong side of sixty, but he does not want to retire. He works at the university. He works part-time. He goes to the university two or three times a week and delivers lectures to students and does scientific work. On the days when he is at home, he works in his study, preparing for his lectures and writing a book.
Our grandmother is retired. She was a teacher and worked at school. She is recognized head of the family. She keeps house. Of course we help her about the house: all of usdo our share in daily household chores. My sister washes the dishes, sweeps and washes the floor, washes the sink in the kitchen. My work is empting the dustbin, beating the capets, dusting and vacuum cleaning. Our mother and father do most of the shopping. My mother and my sister also do washing. Read and translate the text.

Meals in Britain

A traditional English breakfast is a very big meal – sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms… . But nowadays many people just have cereal with milk and sugar, or toast with marmalade, jam, or honey. Marmalade and jam are not the same! Marmalade is made from oranges and jam is made from other fruit. The traditional breakfast drink is tea, which people have with cold milk. Some people have coffee, often instant coffee, which is made with just hot water.
Many visitors to Britain find this coffee disgusting!
For many people lunch is a quick meal. In cities there are a lot of sandwich bars, where office workers can choose the kind of bread they want – brown, white, or roll – and then all sorts of salad and meat or fish to go in the sandwich. Pubs often serve good, cheap food, both hot and cold. School-children can have a hot meal at school, but many just take a snack from home – a sandwich, a drink, some fruit, and perhaps some crisps.
Tea means two things. It is a drink and a meal! Some people have afternoon tea, with sandwiches, cakes, and, of course, a cup of tea. Cream teas are popular. You have scones (a kind of cake) with cream and jam.
The evening meal is the main meal of the day for many people. They usually have it quite early, between 6.00 and 8.00, and often the whole family eats together.
On Sundays many families have a traditional lunch. They have roast meat, either beef, lamb, chicken, or pork, with potatoes, vegetables, and gravy. Gravy is a sauce made from the juices.
The British like food from other countries, too, especially Italian, French, Chinese, and Indian. People often get take-away meals – you buy the food at the restaurant and then bring it home to eat. Eating in Britain is quite international!

Exercise 2. Read and translate the text.

The English About The English Weather

The English weather on the whole is not exceptionally good. It’s very damp, we have a lot of rain. Our weather is very changeable: a fine morning may change into a wet afternoon and evening. Conversely, a miserable morning may give place to a glorious afternoon.
The English summer is usually disappointing. We expect during winter to have two or three months of extremely good weather, sunshine and hot weather, hot enough to bathe, to go to the sea. But summer months are often cool, there is always plenty of rain. Planning summer holidays is not easy because you can never depend on the weather. One year June may be hot and sunny and July and August rainy, another year it might be the other way round. So many people who look forward to the summer holidays, if they can afford it, go abroad for their holidays, though there are so many lovely beaches on the English coast.
The English winter is not cold. The temperature seldom falls below 3-4 degrees. The usual temperature is about zero. The air is frequently damp and foggy. It often rains and it seldom snows. The snow melts very quickly.
Autumn is the season of foggy, windy days. A spell of sunny weather in October is called an Indian Summer.
Spring is a warm and beautiful season. Spring flowers start to bloom from February. The weather in spring however, is changeable, and even if the sky is blue without a single cloud in the morning there is no guarantee that it may not rain within a short time. It is always wise to take a mac or an umbrella.
No conversation ever starts in England without a comment on the weather. It is almost a formality like shaking hands. “How do you do?”, “Nice day today, isn’t it?”, “Isn’t it hot today?”, “Isn’t it a beastly day?”, “Shocking weather, isn’t it?” – these remarks are often used when speaking about the weather.

Exercise 2. Begin your sentence with one of the following: I don’t think so; I’m afraid you are wrong; on the contrary; it’s not so; far from it; you are quite right; I agree with you; as far as I know.

The Ehglish weather is very changeable. 2. The plane to Yalta took off at 9 a.m., but he had to be at the airport an hour before to register his ticket. His plane was TU-134. It is a comfortable modern plane. Nick’s seat was near the porthole and he could see how they took off in St.Petersburg and landed in Yalta. Read and translate the text.
Mrs. Richards’ Shopping
Last Sunday Mrs. Richards looked into her refrigerator and saw that it was nearly empty. Mrs. Richards does not like when there is nothing in her refrigerator. She took a big bag and went shopping. The best place to do your shopping in is a supermarket. There is a good supermarket not far from Mrs. Richards’ house, and she went there. The supermarket has many self-service counters. Mrs. Richards like it because at a self-service counter you can choose what you like and take it off the counter with your own hands. When Mrs. Richards came to the shop, she took a basket at the entrance and went to the butcher’s counter. They did not have beef that day, but there was a good choice of pork. Mrs. Richards took a good piece of pork and two chickens. She also took half a kilo of mince. Then she went to the greengrocer’s counter, because she wanted some potatoes and cabbage. She did not like the potatoes and decided to go to the market later. But she took a good head of cabbage. After that Mrs. Richards stopped at the grocer’s counter to take a package of macaroni, and then went to the delicatessen counter to see what she could buy for supper. She took a piece of cheese and a piece of sausage. They were selling ham, too, but she decided not to take ham: there was too much fat on it. On the way to the cash-desk Mrs. Richards stopped at the confectioner’s counter to buy some candy and biscuits for tea. She also took a chocolate roll. There were two or three people in front of Mrs. Richards at the cash-desk, and she had to wait a little. When her turn came, she paid for the foodstuffs she had bought and went home. On the way home she called at a dairy-shop to buy a bottle of milk. She did not buy eggs, because her bag was full and she was afraid to break the eggs. She decided to go later for eggs and also to the baker’s to buy a loaf of bread.
Exercise 2. Answer the following questions.
1. What did Mrs. Richards do when she saw that her refrigerator was nearly empty?
2. What is a self-service counter?
3. Where did she take the basket?
4.
