What does the phrase white lie mean?<\/p>\n

M-W defines \u201cwhite lie<\/strong>\u201d as \u201ca lie <\/strong>about a small or unimportant matter that someone tells to avoid hurting another person.\u201d That’s similar to the American Heritage definition<\/strong>: \u201cAn often trivial, diplomatic or well-intentioned untruth.\u201d<\/p>\n

White lies <\/strong>and black lies<\/strong>: What they have in <\/strong>common and how they differ. Black lies<\/strong>, or telling a lie <\/strong>to gain a personal benefit, are universally condemned. In <\/strong>contrast, white lies<\/strong>, or telling a lie <\/strong>to please another person, are seen as an innocent part of everyday interactions.<\/p>\n
